Cremona C, Simms A. & Ward M. (2001) The rocky shore name trail. OP61 FSC/Aidgap.
A very good beginners guide which uses a simple graphical key to name the most common seashore organisms. Available from the Field Studies Council. School years 5/6 to age 90+.
Campbell, A.C. (1976). The Hamlyn Guide to the seashore and shallow seas of Britain and Europe. Hamlyn: Feltham, Middlesex, UK. ISBN 0-600-34396-0. 320 pp.
My favourite hand-guide. It has many good colour illustrations covering the commoner species likely to be found in Britain. Out of print but many second-hand copies are available on Amazon and elsewhere. Some names have changed.
Hayward P.J., Nelson-Smith T. & Shields, C. (1996). Collins Guide: Sea Shore of Britain & Europe. HarperCollins, London. ISBN 0 00 219955 6
Another very good, well illustrated hand-guide. Again out of print but available second-hand. Not to be confused with the following book.
Barrett, J.H. & C.M. Yonge, (1958). Collins pocket guide to the sea shore. Collins, London : 1-272.
An older guide, marred by separating the plates from the text. Notice this is not the guide listed above.
Eales, N.B., (1967). The Littoral Fauna of British Isles. A handbook for collectors. ed. 4. Cambridge : i-xvii, 1-306.
An older guide with some line drawings. It has good field keys to most species, but with old-fashioned taxon names.
Tebble N. (1966). British Bivalve Seashells. Trustees of the British Museum (Natural History): London 212 pp:
A good guide to bivalves (Clams). It has some colour plates and line drawings in the text. Good keys, which use features of the shells, so that species can be identified without access to living specimens.
Picton B.E. & Morrow C.C. (1994). A Field Guide to the Nudibranchs of the British Isles. Immel Publishing Ltd., London.
Many underwater photographs of commoner species. Oriented toward divers, some of the species are strictly sub-tidal and will not be found on shore.
Picton B.E. (1993). A Field Guide to the Shallow-water Echinoderms of the British Isles. Immel Publishing LtId., London.
Many underwater photographs of commoner species. Oriented toward divers, some of the species are strictly sub-tidal and will not be found on shore.

These two volumes are currently the best available guide to all the species likely to be found in British waters. Line drawings of many species and detailed, somewhat technical descriptions of each species. Numerous keys at all levels. Many keys require microscopy and/or dissection. Expensive (£200 per volume) and very large. Also now available in an edited, paperback version at ~£50 . See next entry.
